Shockwave is a non surgical treatment which is non invasive and is used to promote accelerated recovery of injured soft tissue, bone and joint pain. Shockwave is an intense but very short energy wave traveling faster than the speed of sound. The basic technology with extracorporeal shockwave technology has been used for decades on millions of people. Shockwave treatments can be used within a massage therapy treatment or they can be used specifically to treat a condition by itself for example plantar fasciitis. Therapy session times therefore vary depending on the situation but can be as short as 15 minutes.

How does it work?

The machine delivers waves directly to the area using ultrasound gel as a medium, the pulsations break down the tissue which need remodelling, the body then goes into a healing pattern, replacing damaged tissue with new tissue. Stretches and strengthening exercises are given to help rebuild new tissue which will be more functional and therefore less painful and restrictive. Generally we would suggest 3 sessions and then reassessment of the area. The number of treatments needed will depend on what the issue is, how long it has been problematic, how well you stick to the home care advice, what caused it initially and if it is a repetitive strain issue caused by work which may result in the need for further treatments.
