What Is Bowen?
As a Bowen Practitioner I am constantly surprised by the results of Bowen.
Bowen is a hands on therapy which uses only gently pressure; no hard pressure or force is used. I use thumbs and fingers to create a rolling motion over specific points on the body. This prompts the body to repair and rebalance itself causing muscle tension to drop, functions to improve, an increase in energy and most importantly pain to decrease.
The extremely light pressure means that the treatment is perfect for those in extreme pain, feeling fragile or frail – from tiny babies to very elderly.
‘That the body be treated as a whole, without referral to named disease’. The Bowen principle follows this closely. We treat the whole not just the presenting issue which leads us to uncover many small issues as well as the one which brings you into the treatment room. Because of this, it is very common for me to treat the whole body rather than just the shoulder which is causing you pain because we are all connected maybe not directly but through connective tissue. This allows us to unearth the root of the problem where many other treatments may not.
Unlike massage, most of the work can be performed through light clothing. After completing a health history and a short assessment, the treatment will begin. The amount of work in each treatment will depend on the individual, however most first treatments will cover the whole body. The most important aspect of a Bowen Treatment are the breaks in between moves. I will work an area then I will leave the room for a few minutes to provide time for the area to adjust. I may be asking the area to drop tension and within this short break I am allowing the brain to talk to the area in question and allow the tension to move.
Why do you leave the room?
I need you to be as relaxed as possible not thinking about what I am doing. This allows a clearer thought process for you and therefore clearer signals between brain and body.
How long are the treatments?
Each treatment lasts around 45-60 minute .Treatments should be scheduled between 5-9 days apart and an initial set of 3 treatments is recommended in order to establish whether the client is likely to respond to treatment.
Bowen Reactions and Responses
It is not uncommon to feel tired, thirsty, stiff, or flu like after a treatment. In order to reduce these symptoms, I will advise you to follow these instructions:
– Move, keep moving, get the circulation going.
– Drink water, flushing out your system and hydrating your tissues.
– 1 week – return for a follow up treatment.
– Don’t mix with other treatments, let the Bowen have chance to work.
It is really important that a client does not stop treatments because they have experienced a strong reaction. The moves are so subtle that if a strong reaction is experienced, it demonstrates how profound the work can be and further treatments are essential if the full effect is going to be felt.
Most people will have responses within three to four sessions, when even long standing pain has been seen to be relieved in many clients. Some conditions might need to be treated more often, but in either case it is recommended that clients return for regular treatments every six to eight weeks to maintain optimum health.
